Data protection day 2012

Protection of privacy on the Internet by modern protection rules.

The European Commission has proposed a reform of the EU rules on data protection. The EU Charter of fundamental rights guarantees every citizen of the EU right to protection of his personal data. the protection of this right is now becoming increasingly important, because with a mouse click on the internet we leave digital tracks. Today`s online services, such as the pages of social networks or cloud computing  go far beyond that, what was known to security problems. The old directive could ensure control the effective protection of the fundamental right to data protection, but it was implemented differently by the 27 Memeber States.
The Commission`s proposals consist of  a legally binding regulation, which lays down a general framework for data protection and a directive on the  protection of personal data in the field of Justice, in the prevention of crime and in connection with an investigation for offences.

At the presentation of the proposals, said EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding: " My proposals will help to build confidence in online services, because the people are better informed about their rights and get better control over their personal data. But that`s not all. The reform will make also company lives easier and help them, to save costs."
